About the Job

We are looking for a Director of People Operations to help attract top talent to Niche’s team and maintain Niche’s reputation as an amazing place where people want to work as the business grows. You will be critical to help us scale our rapidly growing company and make a lasting impression on our culture. You will be a champion for our employees, working with the Executive Team to help them build, reward, and retain their teams. In this role, we are looking for a leader in HR programs and services including Recruitment, Compensation, Employee Relations, Policy Development, Benefits, Training, and Team Development.

This is an exciting opportunity to bolster the foundation, processes, and systems that will fulfill and empower all of those at Niche as we continue to grow rapidly. We’re looking for a positive and thoughtful self-starter that can take initiative and adapt to evolving circumstances.  The role will work directly with our CEO and Executive Team to lead our people operations, recruiting, and HR compliance functions.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Team culture is extremely important to us. While we believe that culture is every team member’s responsibility, you will be an integral part in helping to maintain a positive, high-performing, and inclusive team culture. You’ll be responsible for coming up with ideas and working with department managers to roll out programs, policies, and projects that will improve team culture.  
  • Own the recruiting process by partnering with department leaders and hiring managers to review, analyze and clarify hiring needs and develop appropriate full-lifecycle recruiting strategies to support those needs.  You will create sourcing strategies and identifying channels that garner high-quality, diverse candidate pools.  You will be responsible for screening, interviewing and evaluating candidates against position requirements.  
  • Responsible for creating a welcoming and supportive onboarding and training process that will help new hire team members feel taken care of excited to join our team. You’ll work with managers to create team building programs to help foster a positive and inclusive team environment. Our desire is that this person will continually be thinking of ways to improve our onboarding and training experiences so team members are supported in the best way possible, and are able to grow with the company long term.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement appropriate training and development processes and programs that support organizational goals and objectives.
  • You’ll need to counsel and work closely with department managers on coaching, performance reviews and improvement plans, terminations, and wage changes.
  • Serve as the point person to support employees with workplace interpersonal issues and grievances as well as questions regarding payroll and benefits, professional development, company policies, and more. You’ll need to approach team communication with diplomacy, confidentiality, empathy, and tact.
  • Responsible for updating the employee handbook ensuring it is compliant with applicable laws, and communicating and training the team on updated policies throughout the year. You’ll need to ensure that all department managers have the HR tools they need to effectively manage their teams.
  • You’ll manage the employee review process, working with department managers to ensure reviews are completed on time and raises are executed consistently.
  • Perform exit interviews with departing team members to determine what we can be doing better for retention and communicate that with department managers.
  • You’ll also be responsible to determine what future benefits might be wise for the company to offer to ensure we are creating a healthy and positive working environment. You’ll need to communicate and educate employees about benefit options and ensure employees understand available benefits.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant employment laws and regulations in all locations in which Niche operates.
  • Perform special projects on an as needed basis.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 5-7 years experience in a People Operations / HR role, with recent experience expanding and managing People Operations at a high-growth start-up preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree or Master’s degree required and related certifications a plus.
  • Excellent project management skills with a proven ability to design and implement people strategy that drives business results.
  • Experience supporting both salary and hourly workforces, creating relevant and meaningful employee programs, reviews and feedback loops.
  • Proven recruiting track record to identify candidate pools and the ability to successfully recruit and onboard new team members.
  • A natural coach and mentor who relates well with others, listens effectively and can build rapport with a diverse workforce -- all in the spirit of helping employees at all levels move from goal to outcome in a developmental way.
  • Strong communicator with the ability to provide both strategic foresight and feedback.
  • Expert understanding of employment law, compensation, benefits, organizational development, employee relations, and training.
  • Positive attitude, responsible approach, and a self-starter that’s not afraid to dive in.
  • Well-developed leadership, communications, team building, and influencing skills; unquestioned integrity; and the experience, confidence, and stature to effectively address sensitive HR and business issues.
  • A strong reputation for building, developing, and leading a respected and business-oriented HR team.
  • Self-motivated, tenacious, works with a sense of urgency, and thrives in a self-directed entrepreneurial environment; enjoys challenges.

Compensation and Benefits:

This is a full time, salaried position with competitive compensation and benefits including 20 paid days off per year, paid parental leave, SIMPLE IRA, disability and life insurance, and a comprehensive health plan, including vision and dental, provided at no cost to the employee. Niche is committed to the local community and offers three paid volunteering days per year.
